What is a conference course?

Conference courses wed academic training with the encouragement and training offered by an event.  Conference courses allow students to earn undergraduate and graduate credit while participating in select conferences across the country.

What conferences allow a student to earn courses credit?

The list of conferences that allow students to earn academic credit varies from semester to semester.  Follow this link for an official list of all conferences allowing students to earn academic credit.

If I’m not a student at Southern Seminary can I take a conference course for credit?

Yes. Participants who are not Southern Seminary students can earn transferable course credit by taking a conference course through SBTS. Please consult your school’s registrar to ensure that course credits will transfer to your respective institution.

If you are not a student at SBTS but would like to take a conference class, complete the Conference Trip Course Application digitally and email it to admissions@sbts.edu.

What degree programs allow for Conference Courses?

All M.Div., M.A., and B.A. students whose degree concentration allows for the specified course credit may participate in Conference Courses.

Southern Seminary students may register for a conference class by accessing their Canvas account at sbts.instructure.com.

Non-SBTS students who would like to take a conference class must complete the Conference Trip Course Application digitally and email it to admissions@sbts.edu. 

Is the conference registration cost included?  

The conference registration is not included for most conference courses. The exception is conferences hosted by Southern Seminary on campus. Check with the Center for Student Success if you have questions about a particular conference.

Will the conference course credit transfer to other theological institutions?

When do official SBTS lectures corresponding to the conference course take place?

Times and locations vary. Typically, official course lectures take place before or after the conference occurs, not during the conference. See the respective course syllabus for details.

Do conference courses count toward on-campus hour requirements?

Yes. All conference courses count for on-campus credit hours.

Do Conference Courses count for a core or elective requirement?

Some conference courses allow students earn only core course credit, others allow students to earn only elective course credit, and others allow students to earn either.  Check my.sbts.edu for more details.

How do I register for a Conference Course?

Southern Seminary students may register for a conference class by accessing their Canvas account at sbts.instructure.com.

If you are not a SBTS student, but would like to take a conference class, complete the Conference Trip Course Application digitally and email it to admissions@sbts.edu.

The cost of a conference course hosted by Southern Seminary is waived for registered students. Students are responsible to register for all other conferences independently. Many conferences have a student rate participants may be eligible for.
