What is the goal of Southern Seminary Expeditions?
Southern Seminary Expeditions provide an opportunity to further ministry equipping and help cultivate a heart and mind that worships Christ. The expeditions offer field lectures by Biblical, theological and historical scholars. You will be able to travel in the foot-steps of the Apostle Paul, stand where the Reformers stood, and walk behind those who led the early church.
What is needed to be allowed to attend this trip?
Anyone over the age of 18 is allowed to attend this trip. If you would like to earn course credit, please visit the registration page.
Is the trip only open for current students?
The trip is open to all. This includes Southern and Boyce students, alumni, and friends of Southern Seminary.
Can I travel to both Rome and Greece on the Expedition trips?
Absolutely. You will receive a discount for traveling on both expeditions. The Rome and Greece package also includes the price of 6 course credits which means you may take one class in each location or take two classes in one location.
What is the cost for registering for a class?
One, 3 credit course is included in the cost of an expedition. Additional Boyce credit is $800/course and SBTS credit is $650/course.
How do I enroll for the courses in conjunction with the trip?
All travel and course registration for the trips takes place online. You can visit the registration page for more details.
You are permitted to earn up to 9 credit hours total during the Rome and Greece expeditions.
Can extension students receive on-campus credit for these courses?
The courses offered on the expedition trips count as “on-campus” credit. Each course is worth 3 credit hours and there are a variety of options. Both required classes and electives will be offered in Rome and Greece. Please note that you may only earn up to 9 credits total during this expedition.
Is there a limit to the amount of credits I can earn during this trip?
You are permitted to earn up to 9 credits (3 courses) during the entire expedition. You may earn them all in Rome, all in Greece or split between the two destinations.
Are the courses offered in conjunction considered a J-term?
Yes, the courses offered on the expedition will be similar to a J-term. There will be reading in advance or after the field lectures. Course syllabi will provide greater detail and will be posted on the site this spring.
What if I don’t want to earn course credit on the trip?
Those who do not apply for course credit will be free to attend and participate in field lectures but will not be required to complete pre and post trip coursework required for the courses offered.
How many spots are available?
Approximately 30 spots are available for each expedition.
Which professor is leading this trip?
The professors leading the Rome and Greece expeditions are Dr. Russell Moore, Dr. Gregory Wills and Dr. Phillip Bethancourt (Greece Only)
Does the cost for an expedition include airfare?
There are two options offered: airfare included or ground-only.
If you choose the ground-only package, you will be responsible for your air travel to and from Rome (FCO) or Greece (ATH). If you choose the air package, all the flights will be departing and returning to the Louisville airport (SDF).
Is the trip all-inclusive?
The trip packages are all-inclusive, which means the cost of all meals, lodging, transportation and tips. The “Ground Only” packages do not include airfare to/from Rome or Greece. You are responsible for arranging and paying for your own transportation to/from the USA.
Are there registration fees in addition to the course fees?
The registration fee for these classes is included in the expedition cost. You will not need to pay separate registration fees as with normal J-term courses.
